2.3 Gender identity
The second aspect of the genderbread cookie is gender identity. This refers to your inner feeling of being a woman, being a man, being both or neither.
Transgender
Transgender is an umbrella term. This means that it is a term that includes a lot of diversity. A lot of people can thus identify with the term trans.
Trans man / Trans woman
A person for which the lived experience of gender identity does not correspond for the most part with the assigned gender can choose to transition. This can mean that the person chooses a new name, prefers different pronouns, starts wearing different clothes, and wants a medical surgery or not. A transition is personal and different for everybody.
Gender queer
Someone who does not feel comfortable with the labels woman or man can identity as gender queer or gender non-binary. These people might prefer the pronouns they/them, instead of she/her or he/him.
Travesty
People who experiment with clothing and behaviors of the opposite sex are partaking in what is called travesty or cross dressing. For some people, this is a part of their identity. For others, this is a form of show or entertainment, for example like the drag queens and drag kings in Ru Paul’s drag race.
