1.2. Gender?!
Have you ever thought about what it means to a woman or a man? Honestly?! A lot of people do not give a second thought. Yet, daily, whether it is conscious or unconscious, we have to deal with expectations that are related to our gender. We call the social expectations that are linked to sex ‘gender’. There are certain ideas of how a woman or man is thinking, behaving or feeling. Gender and sex are related to each other, but are not the same. Gender is sometimes also called the social sex.
Gender is a social construct which determines the position of people within society. In the West there is a binary division of gender: woman and man. This is linked to certain expectations and gender roles. Nowadays, these binary gender norms are questioned more and more.
