Social prejudices

The LGBT community faces several social prejudices. Maybe you are familiar with some of the prejudices, experienced by yourself or maybe by others in your surroundings. Some of these prejudices are negative, others can be qualified as ‘positive’ prejudices. Raising awareness about prejudices is important but so is not mentioning or repeating prejudices.  Even though prejudices are an important part of anti-LGBT hate crimes, it is important not to repeat any prejudices against LGBT’s.

Why not?
Mentioning or repeating prejudices or stereotypes only strengthens those; even when the prejudice or stereotype is immediately invalidated by the speaker.

For this reason, there is no list of prejudices included in this training. To let you think about the effect of social prejudices and to warm you up for the next part about hate crime, please make the following assignment.

Assignment
Take a minute to think about: ‘what makes you who you are’? Then ask yourself how it would make you feel if you are being assaulted or attacked, based on who you are? In general, what thoughts, emotions, behaviours can be triggered after such an assault or attack?
